Hourly and drop-in daycare in Woodside
A real service rather than a keyword: $28 an hour, two-hour minimum, booked against a place that is actually free. Also a limited one, for a reason we publish.
Hourly daycare is one of the most searched-for and least honestly described services in New York City. The demand is real — a shift that moved, a medical appointment, a childminder who cancelled, a week between arrangements — and Woodside has very little of it.
We offer it properly, which means we also have to be straight about the limit. Section 47.05 of the City Health Code says our permit states the maximum number of children allowed on these premises at any time we are operating. That number counts children PRESENT, not children enrolled. An hourly child occupies a permitted place exactly as a full-time child does.
What that means when you telephone
An hourly place exists on a given day only if a permitted place is genuinely unoccupied — because a child is away, because a part-time family is not in, or because we have deliberately held one back. It is not spare goodwill and there is no lighter category of attendance in the Health Code.
So the answer is sometimes no. It will be a straight no with a reason and the days that week which do have room, rather than a maybe that wastes your morning.
And it is why you should be sceptical of anybody in this city advertising unlimited same-day availability. They are either holding a great deal of expensive capacity permanently empty, or describing something the permit does not allow — which is a thing inspections look for and a thing that shows up in a public record.
The paperwork, which is the real obstacle
A first session needs the same enrolment file as a year-long place: a health form signed by your child's physician, a complete immunisation record, emergency contacts and collection authorisations. That is Health Code requirement, not nursery preference, and it applies to a two-hour booking exactly as it applies to a full-time place.
It takes a few days, mostly waiting on the physician's signature. This is the single most common reason we cannot help somebody who rings this morning needing care this afternoon, and it is much better learned now than at nine on a bad morning.
It also applies to a sibling of a child already here. The file belongs to the child rather than to the family, and there is no version of this where we take a child whose health record we do not hold.
How to actually get a place
Register in advance, before you need anything. It is free, takes about twenty minutes, and puts the file on record so that a future call is a question about availability rather than a fortnight of paperwork.
Book a day ahead where you can. Enrolled families booking the previous afternoon get an answer immediately, because we already know what tomorrow looks like in each room.
And if you are booking most weeks, ask us to price fixed part-time days instead. Two or three fixed days is cheaper per hour and considerably better for a child, and we will tell you that rather than take the hourly money.
What an hourly day is actually like
The same as anybody else's. Your child joins the room for their age, with the same adults, the same meals and the same activities — not a holding area for visitors.
A two-hour minimum exists because below that the settling costs the child more than the session gives you. A ninety-minute drop-in is mostly a child working out where they are.
You get the same written note home: sleep, food, mood and one specific thing that happened. An hourly child is a child rather than a booking.
Our permit caps how many children may be here at once. Our permit states the maximum number of children who may be on these premises at any moment the programme is operating, set by the Health Department from the space, the teaching staff and the certificate of occupancy. That number counts children present, not children enrolled — so an hourly child takes up a permitted place in exactly the way a full-time child does. This is the honest reason we cannot always say yes to a drop-in, and the reason to be sceptical of anybody in New York City advertising unlimited same-day availability. It is a legal ceiling, not a scheduling preference.

When to make an appointment
Signs this is worth an assessment
- Your shift moved and you need cover for a specific afternoon.
- You have a medical or legal appointment you cannot take a two-year-old to.
- Your usual childcare has a gap of a week between arrangements.
- You want to register now for something you might need in three months.
- You want to know in advance why the answer will sometimes be no.
- You have been told elsewhere that same-day drop-in is always available and it did not sound right.
Hourly & drop-in — what it costs
- Two-hour minimum, booked against a place that is actually free that day. Enrolled families book a day ahead; new families need a completed health form and immunisation record first, which is the law rather than our preference.$28 / hour
Every rate on this site is published in full on the tuition page, including the ones that make us look expensive. Meals, snacks, nappy changing, settling-in sessions and the whole curriculum are inside the weekly fee — there is no premium tier and no outside provider invoicing you separately for a music class. The two charges that are not in the weekly fee are registration, at $75 a year per family rather than per child, and late collection after 6:15pm at $1 a minute, which goes to the two members of staff who stayed. If your child is three or four, read the 3-K page before you read this one.
Questions we are actually asked
Hourly & drop-in — frequently asked
Is there hourly daycare in Woodside, NY?
Yes — here, at $28 an hour with a two-hour minimum, booked against a place that is genuinely free on the day. It is a real service rather than a search term, which is exactly why it has limits worth publishing rather than hiding.
Can I drop my child off this morning?
Almost certainly not if you are new to us, and it is worth being blunt about that. A first session needs a completed health form signed by a physician plus a full immunisation record, which takes days rather than minutes. If you are already registered and there is room, a same-day session is sometimes possible.
Why is hourly care limited?
Because our Health Code permit caps how many children may be on the premises at any moment, and that cap counts children present rather than enrolled. An hourly child takes up a permitted place exactly as a full-time child does. It is a legal ceiling rather than a scheduling preference.
How far ahead should I book?
A day ahead is ideal for enrolled families and gets an immediate answer. Registration — which is free and takes about twenty minutes — should be done well before you need anything, because it is the part that cannot be rushed.
Is hourly cheaper than enrolling part-time?
Per hour, no. If you are booking most weeks, two or three fixed days at 45% or 65% of the full rate is cheaper and settles a child far better. We would rather tell you that than take the hourly money.

Come and see the room
A tour here happens during a session, in the room your child would actually be in, at the time of day they would be in it. You meet the person who leads that room rather than only the director, and you see the noise and the mess that are genuinely there. It takes an hour. If your child is three or four we will ask whether you have applied for free 3-K or Pre-K for All before we quote you a rate, because a good many families should not be paying us at all.
