Accessibility

Accessibility

What has been built in, what has actually been checked, and what is known to fall short. A nursery whose families arrive with buggies, and sometimes with wheelchairs, should get this part right.

  • Keyboard navigable
  • Contrast measured in the build
  • Step-free entrance

The building

Ground floor on 61st Street with no step at the entrance and no lift to wait for. All five rooms, the kitchen, the washrooms and the yard are on that level. There is buggy parking inside the door rather than on the pavement.

If you use a wheelchair, a walker or a stick and want to know whether a specific thing will work — the door width, the turning space in a room, whether you can get to the yard — telephone and ask before you visit rather than finding out on arrival.

What is built into this website

  • Every page is a single <h1> followed by a proper heading order, so a screen reader's outline matches the visible one. The build fails if any page has more or fewer than one.
  • Every image carries alt text describing what it shows, and every image declares its width and height so the page does not jump about as it loads.
  • Colour contrast is measured in the build rather than asserted here — the audit tool reads real computed values against real backgrounds on both the light and the dark sections of every page.
  • Every class the markup emits is checked against the stylesheet, so nothing ships as unstyled text.
  • The whole site is keyboard navigable and focus is visible throughout.
  • The navigation drawer traps focus while it is open and returns it where it came from.
  • The hero video is decorative, muted, carries no captions because it has no content, and is hidden from assistive technology. It respects a reduced-motion preference.
  • Nothing depends on colour alone.
  • No text is an image, so page zoom and browser text sizing both work properly.
  • No font is fetched from a third party, so nothing renders as invisible text while a network request that will never arrive times out.

What is known to be imperfect

Some of these pages are long — deliberately, because the awkward questions deserve an answer at length rather than a sentence. That does make them slower to skim with a screen reader; every one has a heading structure that allows jumping between sections, which is a partial answer rather than a complete one.

This site has been tested with a keyboard and with the accessibility checks in the build. It has not been tested by a person who uses a screen reader daily, and that is the gap most worth naming.

If something does not work

Email daycare@bestdealwebdesign.com or telephone 000-000-0000 and say what you were trying to do and what happened. For this demonstration site there is nobody on the other end, and on a real nursery's site that sentence would be the most important one on the page.

Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the children are here

Come and see the room

A tour here happens during a session, in the room your child would actually be in, at the time of day they would be in it. You meet the person who leads that room rather than only the director, and you see the noise and the mess that are genuinely there. It takes an hour. If your child is three or four we will ask whether you have applied for free 3-K or Pre-K for All before we quote you a rate, because a good many families should not be paying us at all.
