Before you ask us about a three- or four-year-old. New York City funds free, full-day 3-K and Pre-K for All for every resident child of the right age, regardless of income or immigration status. If your child was born in 2022 or 2023 and you have not applied, do that first — here is what to check. We would rather tell you now than take a deposit.

What to have ready when you call

Your child’s date of birth, the days and hours you need, and when you need to start. Those three things decide whether we have anything at all, and we can usually answer on the first call — including telling you plainly that we cannot help and roughly how long the room you want has historically taken.

If you need an hourly or a drop-in place, say so at the start. A first session needs a health form signed by a physician and a complete immunisation record, which takes a few days rather than a few minutes, and that is the commonest reason we cannot help somebody who telephones on the morning.

If you are already enrolled

Ring about anything, at any time of day, and ask for the room rather than the office. The person who was actually with your child is the person worth speaking to, and we would much rather take a call at eleven in the morning than have you worry until half past five.

You may also come into your child’s room during a session, unannounced, without giving us a reason. We ask you to sign in at the desk because the Health Code requires us to know who is in the building, not because we need notice.

Getting here

61st Street, a short walk from the 7 at 61st Street–Woodside and from the Long Island Rail Road station above it. Ground-floor entrance with no step and a single controlled door. Parking on 61st Street is what you would expect, so families arriving by car generally use the ten-minute standing zone rather than looking for a space.

Tell us your child’s date of birth, the days and hours you need and when you would want to start, and we can usually answer properly first time. Tours are arranged from the tour page.

This is a demonstration site for a fictional nursery. The form is a live MaiaHost managed contact form and it does deliver, but no child is enrolled here, no place can be offered, and nobody on the other end is an early-years educator.

In New York City it is the Health Department, not OCFS. A nursery inside the five boroughs is not regulated by OCFS. It is permitted and inspected by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene under Article 47 of the City Health Code, which sets different ratios and group sizes from the state rules that apply everywhere else in New York. Separate permits are needed for infant and toddler care, for two- to five-year-olds, and for night care; a permit runs a maximum of two years; and every site is inspected at least annually, in practice often twice. If you have been comparing us against a state ratio table you found online, you have the wrong document.

Things we do not do, including one we are not permitted to. We do not offer night care, and could not — it requires its own separate Health Code permit which we do not hold. We do not take sick children, we do not collect from schools, we do not run a minibus, we do not employ a speech therapist or an occupational therapist, we do not tutor, and we do not offer a premium curriculum tier because there is only one curriculum here. Where you need one of those, we will tell you what it is actually called and where in this borough to look for it.

Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the children are here

Come and see the room

A tour here happens during a session, in the room your child would actually be in, at the time of day they would be in it. You meet the person who leads that room rather than only the director, and you see the noise and the mess that are genuinely there. It takes an hour. If your child is three or four we will ask whether you have applied for free 3-K or Pre-K for All before we quote you a rate, because a good many families should not be paying us at all.
